London , Ont.: laughing all the way to the bank.
In October 2002, the privately operated John Labatt Centre was opened in London Ontario . The city estimated it would cost $21.4 million using public money.
Instead they privatized, boosting the total cost of the arena to over $41 million, of which the city paid $32 million, an increase of 10.5 million dollars. It didn't end there. While the private company contributed only $7 million, the Government of Canada added an extra $2.5 million to help pay for the build. Today the arena is making money. But instead of the city profiting on its success, the private operators are "taking the City to the bank" by raking in profits, while public money pays them to do it.
