Since our last collective agreement, Local 7800 members have experienced some of the positive benefits of being a union member.
The CUPE 4800 bargaining team will continue the fight to protect our job security, seek better compensation and benefits that reflect the quality of our work, and represent our members in the best possible way.
To help our members prepare for the next round of bargaining, it is important to assess some of the recent victories from our existing collective agreement, which provided us with:
- Stronger job security language
- Better grievance and arbitration procedure
- Enhanced pay and benefits
- And many other improvements
Stronger job security language
- Job protection - better layoff and redeployment language (at MUMC)
- We won and maintained existing strong language allowing us to fight contracting out and layoffs
- We also won a restriction on volunteers at our McMaster site
- Better job posting language (at MUMC) - better recognition for seniority and abilities to perform normal requirements of the job
Victories in Grievances & Complaints
- We won a grievance which calls for our employer to accommodate an employee with a disability - this victory allowed our member an opportunity to continue to work without additional hardship
- We also won a health and safety complaint, regarding a Sodexho worker at the hospital waste dock - this victory will help us improve health and safety protection for our members.
Increase in Pay
- We won an increase in pay of 8.5% over three years. To some members this amounted to between $1 and $4/hr
- Our shift premium was increased to $0.55/hr
- Our weekend premium was also increased to $0.55/hr
Improved Benefits
- We won improvements for complete and partial dentures, crowns, bridgework, and repairs.
- We are now allowed $150 in vision care every 24 months.
- Annual allowances of $80 for full-time members and $45 for regular part-time workers are now available for protective footwear.
- We are now entitled to three consecutive working days for bereavement, as opposed to previous language which only allowed for three calendar days.
- We are also entitled to 100% paid long term disability and a better short-term sick plan (at MUMC)
- Better vacation entitlements for employees over 23, 30, and 35 years of service.
